Sugar: disease-promoting ingredient

What are the major corroborators in America's sugar consumption? Sweet drinks and sodas. One study noted that soft drink consumption has risen by 61 percent in adults from 1977 to 1997, while it has more than doubled in children and adolescents from 1977–1978 to 1994–1998. As a result, many parents are trying to get soft drink machines taken out of public and private schools. In fact, New Jersey recently prohibited snack and soda vendors from all school grounds.

What has the sugar industry done in response to the obvious dangers their product poses? They do what any industry does: Hide the facts, then fabricate their own. One trick up Big Sugar's sleeve is hiding nutritional information on food and drink packages. In order to consume 150 pounds of sugar per year, Americans have to eat a teaspoon of sugar per hour every 24 hours, seven days a week. Obviously, we don't actually chew on teaspoons of sugar. Instead, many people unknowingly consume food and drinks containing ridiculous amounts of sugar. But don't expect labels to help you determine how much sugar is added. Sugar has all sorts of names: dextrose, glucose, fructose, lactose, corn syrup, maple sugar, honey, invert sugar or malt. In 2002, the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) petitioned the FDA to require food manufacturers to clearly label the amount of added sugar. The petition failed. Lifestyle changes lead to drop in heart attack deaths

NEW YORK: Healthier eating habits and a decline in smoking may explain a large share of the drop in heart disease deaths the UK has seen since the 1980s, a new study suggests.

Research has shown that since the 1980s, heart disease deaths have fallen by roughly one-half in many industrialized countries.

The relative importance of the various reasons for this decline is not fully clear, however.

A central question is whether “primary” or “secondary” prevention is more important. Primary prevention refers to the prevention of heart disease in healthy people, while secondary prevention means reducing potentially fatal complications like heart attack in people with diseased heart arteries.

Right now, the priority in the UK and the US seems to be on the latter, according to Dr. Belgin Unal of Dokuz Eylul University in Izmir, Turkey.

But in their study, Unal and his colleagues found that primary prevention was responsible for about half of the steep decline in heart disease deaths in England and Wales since 1981 — with diet changes and a reduction in smoking getting most of the credit.

All told, primary prevention was four times more effective at preventing deaths compared with treatment of existing heart disease, according to the researchers’ estimates, which were published online by the British Medical Journal.

Primary prevention works, Unal told Reuters Health, because it targets people who are generally healthy, encouraging smoking cessation and lifestyle changes to cut cholesterol and blood pressure before they rise too high. Medications are also part of preventing heart disease, but they are prescribed only after cholesterol and blood pressure climb to a concerning level. — Reuters

Take medication as a last resort, not a first choice.

Dr. Strand: Well, I have been in the practice for 31 years of my medical career and I think all physicians appreciate the inherent risks all drugs present to their patient. We are always weighing the risk of medication, or the risk of adverse drug reactions, to the health benefits they can obtain. So what really got my attention was an article written in The Journal of American Medical Association back in 1998, in which they showed that properly prescribed medication, prescribed and taken properly, is the fourth-leading cause of death in the country. Then, when you add the improperly prescribed medications to this that are not taken properly, that is another 80,000 deaths, making it the third-leading cause of death. Yet, no one in this country is talking about it. We don’t even keep statistics on it. Yet, all other researchers present the fact that over half of these deaths could be avoided if people just knew what to do. So I think that was the purpose and reason for writing the book. It's just to warn people that they don't need to take so much medication. If you really need to take medication, take it. But I have always had the philosophy: You should take medication as a last resort, not a first choice. Do not have blind faith in the FDA, the pharmaceutical industry, the doctor or the pharmacist. You need to take some personal responsibility to protect yourself and your loved ones from an adverse drug reaction.

Nutritional Study: TV ads market junk food to kids.

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- For young Americans, the "food landscape" in television advertising is packed with junk food, according to a new study.

The study by researchers at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is the first to explore the nutritional composition of foods advertised to children using Nutrition Facts labeling.

Nutrient-poor high-sugar foods – candy, sweets and soft drinks – dominate (nearly 44 percent) the foods advertised during the TV programs children ages 6 to 11 watch most, the analysis found. Convenience/fast foods made up 34.2 percent of the advertisements during the programs.

There are not yet any recommended daily values (RDVs) for sugar, but these two groups of foods "exceed the RDVs of fat, saturated fat and sodium, and fail to provide the RDVs of fiber and certain vitamins and minerals," said Kristen Harrison, the lead author of the study.

A 2,000-calorie-a-day diet of foods in the child-audience ads "would exceed the RDV for sodium and provide nearly a cup of sugar," said Harrison, a professor of speech communication at Illinois and an expert on media effects on children and adolescents.

"How many kids actually eat a diet like that, I can't say," she said. "But it's important to note that this is the nutritional composition of the diet being marketed to kids and their families, and research shows that the more they are exposed to such advertising, the more likely they are to buy the advertised foods. So, heavy TV viewers probably follow a diet more similar to the TV-advertised diet than do lighter viewers."

Given the food industry's heavy marketing of convenience/fast foods and other refined, high-calorie products, Harrison said, "It is becoming increasingly difficult for parents to maintain the moderation necessary to preserve their children's health."

Other findings:
• Snack-time eating in TV advertising is depicted more often than breakfast, lunch and dinner combined. More than half of all eating is depicted in locations "rarely associated with mealtime eating" such as in cars or outdoors.

• Junk-food ads dominated, with far fewer ads for breads and cereals. The ads offered "little representation" of fruits and vegetables, dairy foods, meats, poultry and fish.

• Child actors' body size was unrelated to there eating behavior, "suggesting, erroneously, that eating and body weight are not related," Harrison said.

• Most ads featured no health-related messages. Of the few that did, the most common message was that advertised foods contained "some natural ingredients."

Harrison and Marske also evaluated the nutritional content of food advertised to adults during the most popular TV shows. They found that those ads were dominated (57.1 percent) by convenience/fast foods, fat and sodium.

"An individual eating a 2,000-calorie diet composed of the general-audience foods would consume considerably more than the RDVs of fat, saturated fat and sodium, while ingesting only a fraction of the RDVs of fiber, vitamin C, calcium and iron."

Harrison said kids' consumption of TV ads that tout poor food choices is especially troubling because childhood obesity is on the rise, TV advertising influences children's food purchases and purchase requests, and kids see so many TV food ads a day.

Harrison and Marske tallied an average of 10.65 food advertisements per hour in their sample. Other research has found that preteens watch on average nearly three hours of television a day, meaning that "the typical child aged 6-11 years would be exposed to approximately 11,000 food advertisements each year."

Aging rule #1: Quit Smoking

Smokers 'will die 10 years early'
Smoking cigarettes cuts an average of 10 years off a person's life, a landmark study suggests. But it also shows that quitting at any age reduces the risks of dying from smoking-related diseases.

The findings, published in the British Medical Journal, are the culmination of a 50-year study involving 34,439 doctors. The study, which began in 1951, was the first to confirm the link between smoking and lung cancer exactly 50 years ago.

Fifty year study
All of those involved in the study were born between 1900 and 1930 and all worked as doctors. They were each asked about their smoking habits at the start of the study in 1951. Researchers contacted them periodically over the next 50 years to see if those habits had changed. Since the study began in 1951, tobacco has killed around 100 million people They also gathered information on those who died during the period.

They have now analyzed that data.
They found that men who have never smoked lived on average 10 years longer than those who smoked for most of their lives. Men who smoked were at least twice as likely to die before the age of 70 as non-smokers. They were up to three times more likely to die before they were 90 compared to those who never took up the habit. The average age of these men when they started smoking was 18. On average, they said they smoked around 18 cigarettes a day. It was already known that about half of all persistent cigarette smokers are killed by their habit, a quarter while still in middle age (35-69 years). The biggest killers are cancer, heart disease and stroke. But the study also revealed that giving up cigarettes at any age has major health benefits. It found that men who had stopped smoking by the time they were 30 lived as long as those who never smoked. Those who quit at 40, lived just one year less than those who had never smoked. Those who stopped smoking at 50 added six years onto their lives, while those who kicked the habit at 60 added an extra three years to their life.

Major killer
Sir Richard Doll, who has been involved in the study since the start, said smoking was still a major killer in the UK. "Over the past few decades prevention and better treatment of disease have halved non-smoker death rates in the elderly in Britain. "But these improvements have been completely nullified by the rapidly increasing hazards of tobacco for those who continue to smoke cigarettes."

Sir Richard Peto, professor of medical statistics and epidemiology at Oxford University has collaborated on the study for 30 years. He said smoking was responsible for millions of death. "Partly because of earlier results from this 50-year-long study many people in Britain gave up smoking, and this country now has the best decrease in tobacco deaths in the world. "But, in many countries tobacco deaths are still going up. In Britain, tobacco has caused six million deaths over the last 50 years. But, worldwide, tobacco will soon be causing six million deaths each year. Simon Clark, director of the smokers' rights group Forest said everybody knew there were risks associated with smoking. "However tobacco is still a legal product which brings a lot of pleasure to many people, including a significant number of doctors. "Government has a role to play educating people about the health risks but in a mature society people should have the freedom to make an informed choice without being patronized or forced to give up."

Smoking ban.
Passive smoking is a significant risk to health. Smoking in public places
is banned completely in many countries, but the current proposals for
England will allow some licensed establishments (pubs not serving catered
food and private members clubs) to be exempt from a smoking ban.

Health management.
Let’s presume that you are among those with no health complains what so ever. It probably never crossed your mind what it means for your joy and income if it was the other way around. Not everybody is ‘tuning’ his or her body the way they should. There’s no waiting list to become a sport school member and many don’t even have any physical activities what so ever. On the other side, if you don’t give your body enough rest or you lead a stressful life, be prepared that some parts will break down. It is the same as driving your car at full power in the morning without giving the engine time to warm up!

Smoking & Health.
Although they like to join the race and they try to qualify, you are never ever going to be a winner. The question is why would someone do something knowing he’s destined to be a born looser?

Fuel.
The simplest thing to think about is fuel. Ever had the experience of putting the wrong fuel in your car? I don’t have to tell you that it isn’t going to work. However, how many people make this mistake everyday with their food? Don’t even expect to get old without discomforts and diseases. For many of those living like that, they don’t even get to the finish! Everybody has seen a breath-taking race were the one in the lead dropped out …… no fuel left. In such a high-tech sport witch involves millions of dollars and people all over the world watching. Don’t you think that was plain stupid?

How about fueling your body?
Lets face it; most people don’t have a clue. Did you know you have a lot of fuel meters? You get thirsty so you need to stop and drink something. And be sure to get in the right fuel! You’re getting sleepy so your body needs rest. You wake up tired in the morning, something’s wrong. You have a lack of energy? You’re not going to finish today. You’ve got a headache and you feel pain somewhere. These are all signs that you’re not treating your body like you should.

How about your car?
Every year, or after … miles your car is going to the garage to be serviced. If you know the car is using oil you check this at regular intervals or for a long trip. The thought alone you’re car might breakdown is a call for action to be sure everything is in perfect condition. Back to formula 1 were the teams find innovative solutions during testing. Die Babyboomgeneration hat jetzt das Alter "vierzig plus" erreicht. Sie sind und bleiben ein einflussreicher ökonomischer Faktor in der Gesellschaft. Sie stehen noch intensiv im Arbeitsleben und mit Aussicht auf, oder bereits mitten in der Abbauphase ihrer Carrière, wollen sie jetzt und später ihr Leben noch in vollen Zügen genießen können. Aus diesem Grund widmen sie ihrem “Wohlbefinden” immer mehr Aufmerksamkeit. Das beinhaltet, sich gut um seine Gesundheit zu kümmern, sich vital zu fühlen, noch jung auszusehen und die finanzielle Unabhängigkeit zu haben, sich das alles auch leisten zu können. Who’s making the Health decision: You or your Doctor?

Recently someone told me that she needed an operation, at least that’s what the doctor said. In the ten minutes she was in his practice, he received three phone calls. Was there a decent explanation about; Why she needed the operation? – What were the options? – What are the risks?

On the other hand I hear doctors complaining about; “Now a day lots of patients come to the office with some printout from the Internet” – and – A doctor told me; “Those ten minutes per patient aren’t enough, I need more time. This policy brought me in trouble when I treated patients from several colleges when I had the weekend shift.

This raises some questions?
* How many people know enough about health?
* How many people are well educated about (un) healthy food?
* How many people know about Acid Base Balance?
* How many people know about alternative medicine?
* How many people are well informed about different options?
* How many doctors know all the options?

Contrary information.
With the media virtually controlled by big advertisers like the pharmaceutical companies, people don’t know what to do and whom to trust anymore? This kind of contrary stories you can read almost everyday in the newspapers, magazines hear and see on other media.

The baby boom generation is now in there “forties”. In our society they will always be an economic force with lots of influence. Still working hard, or having their career run-down phase in sight, they want to enjoy life now and in the future. That’s why they pay more attention to their “wellbeing”. That means taking care of their health, enjoying vitality, looking good, and a financial situation so they can afford this lifestyle. Preventive healthcare is in the picture, now more than ever. That’s why the baby boom generation is looking for ways to achieve this!

Healthcare
For those who don’t pay enough attention to preserve their health will soon face major problems. The traditional medical care will become an invaluable matter with the increasing demographic senior ageing. On top of that, people are facing increasing healthcare waiting lists in some countries. Will there be a doctor available when you need one? More and more people discover that general practitioners try to make it a nine to five job. When was the last time he or she made a house call?

Social security
